„Night sounds“– Acoustic images

I have taken the recordings  (with a pair of ear microphones, OKM II Soundman)  last summer in order to use them as some stand-alone narrative sequences in my radio piece “Der Nachtportier” – “The night porter”.

While capturing I was standing at the entrance of a city hotel, facing the other side of the street. The night porter normally likes to stand there sometimes after midnight watching the bustle on the streets. I wanted to record from his perspective.

The location provides a wide stereo image, what makes it a great pleasure to record binaural audio.

RB Night sounds – Didn’t I tell you

I recommend headphones so that you can get best results while listening.

R E C … R E C … R E C …

I pleaded with the good spirits of field recording for active cooperation: Can you please arrange a pedestrian to come from the extreme left or right edge of my audio stereo image increasingly closer to where I am, then pass by –without talking to me, please, even if I am standing here like a living statue, irritating people–, and then move away to the other edge of the stereo image? You think you can do that? And please, if you don’t mind, I’d like trams coming from each side and voices here and there. And, if possible, can you arrange all that as a narrative sequence, duration, let’s say, 1:30 to 2:00 minutes? Thank you.  –  Everything worked fine.

Unedited binaural field recording, 01:29. Taken with Soundman OKM microphone and mini disc recorder.

The best way to hear the recording is through headphones.

NOTE: The Audiotalaia Netlabel run by sound artist Edu Comelles has released my “Serendipity Effects” last summer.
